The Art Deco period saw an almost revolution in terms of the style of jewellery and it brought with it radical changes compared to those pieces which came before, with pieces from the time reflecting the growing optimism of the nation, as well as the developments in technologies and machines alongside new artistic movements.
Dated between 1920 and 1935, the Art Deco period started to originate from around 1915 and continued until the late 30’s. The real explosion in the trend came in the mid 1920’s thanks to the likes of Exposition des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes" held in 1925 in Paris. As such, it’s not uncommon to see Art Deco style rings from 1915 onwards.
Many of the trends seen during the Art Deco period were seen as daring in comparison to what had gone before them and popular symbols of the period include designs which feature careful geometry and symmetry as well as ribbons, swirls and flower shapes. Many pieces also saw a strong use of motifs influenced by travel, other cultures and even King Tutankhamen’s tomb in 1922.
Art Deco rings saw yellow gold go out of the window, being replaced by a popularity of platinum, white gold and sterling silver alongside brightly coloured gemstones and diamonds. As an example, Art Deco engagement rings and wedding rings often featured stunning diamond solitaires which were framed by geometric metalwork.
