ANTIQUE GEORGIAN MOURNING SNAKE NECKLACE ROCK CRYSTAL 18CT GOLD CIRCA 1800
An exquisite antique Mourning snake necklace from the Georgian era made up of three different shades of lovely brown hair which is plaited beautifully to create one thick strand.
Mourning jewellery was sometimes created from strands of hair and was used as a souvenir to remember a loved one so that a piece of them was always kept close to the wearer.
The piece is finished with a fabulous 18ct Yellow Gold snake head and tail which forms a hook clasp. Both sections feature beautiful engraved detail and the head is crowned with a clear Rock Crystal which showcases plaited hair underneath as well.
Serpent jewellery often represented love, loyalty and friendship. The depiction of a snake swallowing its tail was also a symbol of eternal love.
This truly is a wonderful find, beautifully preserved and steeped in history.
